How to Use E-Track Ratchet Straps

E-Track ratchet straps have become the industry standard for hauling cargo. They snap into E-Track and easily secure heavy equipment, furniture, and vehicles.

A great thing about these straps is that they won’t fall out during loading and unloading like hook-end straps sometimes do. They stay locked in their E-Track slots until you remove them.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to tighten, release, and store your E-Track straps. (Click here for a PDF version of this guide)

Step 1: Prepare the Strap

Make sure the strap is not too wound up by pressing the release latch while opening the lever fully.

Pull on the feed end until the strap is loose. Then, press the release latch again and close the lever.

Step 2: Attach E-Track Fittings and Eliminate Slack

Insert the fixed-side E-Track fitting into an E-Track slot. Then, pull the strap over your cargo and attach the adjustable side E-Track fitting.

Pull on the loose end of the strap until you’ve removed all the slack.

Step 3: Ratchet Tight

Once you’ve removed the slack, pump the lever until the strap is taut. You should see the webbing winding around the axle.

Do not overtighten. If you can’t fit your finger between the ratchet and the cargo, you’ve probably ratcheted it too tight.

Fold the excess webbing and tuck it under the strap. This will prevent it from getting underfoot or causing damage during transit.

How to Loosen Your E-Track Ratchet Strap

To undo the strap, press on the release latch while opening the ratchet lever fully. The ratchet should lie totally flat.

Pull on the fixed side to give the strap slack.

How to Store Your E-Track Ratchet Strap

Always lock the ratchet to store. To do so, press on the release latch and bring the lever to the closed position.

Be sure that the straps are dry before storing. Consider storing in an E-Track bag or toolbox to keep the straps accessible and safe.
